Bad patch -- Microsoft pulls faulty NT 4.0 patch (IDG)
Microsoft has pulled back a security patch for Windows NT 4.0 that is crashing the operating system. The patch, released in December, fixes a privilege elevation vulnerability that could give an outsider administrative privileges on a system by exploiting a flaw in the WM_TIMER Windows function. Users began complaining of random crashes and reboots after installing the patch that were fixed by removing it. Microsoft said it will release an updated patch soon.

MS to SEC: Penguin's peck is a threat (InternetWeek)
Microsoft really does fear the penguin! The company has told the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission that open-source software is a threat to its business model. The company also claimed that the penguin's peck may mean Microsoft will have to cut the price of Windows.

MEMBER POLL
Who's to blame for Slammer?
We all love to point fingers. Now's your chance to assign blame in the matter of the Slammer worm. Was it your own fault for not patching? Was it Microsoft's fault for allowing it? Or was the worm's author the only person at whom people should be throwing stones?

Steps to a strong security plan
Devising one catch-all security planning checklist that every type of company could use is nearly impossible. The need for a baseline guide, however, is great, so we asked a security expert to share his security checklist.

ASK ROBERTA BRAGG
Can we expand user privileges?
Dear Roberta:
We want our application to be able to be run by a restricted user. However, for some reason, the application cannot be started with a restricted user. Why? (I am no ace on user privileges.) Does it have to do with the fact that our application is making modifications in the registry? If this is the case, can we somehow expand the restricted users privileges to allow registry modifications?

THE MISSING LINK
Technology drives motorists to blissful ignorance

Technology -- it sure beats thinking. A new computerized product could make getting behind the wheel a real no-brainer, which is good because a lot of drivers seem to be short on brains but long on middle fingers.
