KILL SERVICE PACK UNINSTALL FILES | by Serdar Yegulalp

A server that has been in place for a long time may accumulate a
great many backup folders from the installation of Service Packs and
pre-SP hotfixes. If the server has been running dependably for quite
some time (usually a month or two is enough to give a Service Pack a
good shakedown), you can usually remove the Service Pack uninstall
files and free up some space (around 25-100 MB per Service Pack).

DESIGN ACTIVE DIRECTORY AS A DATABASE | by Carol Miller

What are some of the parallels between AD and the database? Keeping a
well working database is simple -- if planning is sufficient and
maintenance performed regularly. Treat your Active Directory
deployment in a similar fashion, and you'll be well ahead of the
game.

INCREASE MEMORY WITH 'PHYSICAL ADDRESS EXTENSION' | by Doug Drewry

Have you ever examined your Windows 2000 Advanced Server machine and
wondered why it only reports 3.4 GB of RAM installed? Curious,
especially since Advanced Server is capable of utilizing up to 8 GB
of memory! Check your boot.ini file for the /PAE switch in the ARC
path as defined in the 'operating systems' section. If the entry is
not present, follow the procedure outlined in this tip.

CAN I DO BACKUPS WITHOUT MANAGING MEDIA? | Ask Jerry Honeycutt

Dear Jerry:
I support a four-workstation church domain with a Windows 2000 Server
running RAID 5. I would like to do a full backup of the server every
night by having the church secretary change the tape every morning.
However, since I have no free space, I have to go in every weekend,
de-allocate and prepare the tape. Is there any way to get around this
so I don't have to go through this routine every weekend? I can then
set a script on the server to e-mail the logs to me every day for
review, de-allocate and prepare the tape that way.

10-4, DO YOU COPY? | Know-IT-All Quiz #21

Test your knowledge with this week's quiz, then visit the list of
related information you'll find on the answer page.

ACLs (access control lists,) don't work on any other file system than
an NTFS volume -- and when copying a file or a folder to another NTFS
volume, the ACLs don't travel with the file by default. To force ACLs
to always be preserved when copying files between volumes:

a. Overwrite the existing ACLs rather than rename them
b. Adjust the appropriate REGEDIT properties
c. Add a REG_DWORD value named 'ForceCopyAclwithFile'
d. Add a registry value that preserves metadata
e. Join a convoy and keep the smokies off your tail
