Microsoft takes hammer to Slammer (CNET)
Microsoft is now trying to take a hammer to Slammer -- the company has put some tools on its Web site that systems admins can use to probe their SQL Servers for, and protect them against, the worm. The anti-Slammer tools are for SQL Server 2000 versions that run on network servers as well as the SQL Server Desktop Engine. The tools complement the already-released patches.

We all love to point fingers. Now's your chance to assign blame in the matter of the Slammer worm. Was it your own fault for not patching? Was it Microsoft's fault for allowing it? Or was the worm's author the only person at whom people should be throwing stones?

Guarding the Net: Gabriel leads patron saint pack
![]()
You can hear the band playing the new song now -- "When the Saints Go Surfing In." The Vatican is trying to decide who will be the patron saint of the Internet, the one to pray to when you need a higher power for protection from hackers, pop-ups and so forth. Right now, the archangel Gabriel has a spirited lead, but there is some quality competition, including a Polish priest who believed in using technology to spread the word. Saint Clare of Assisi is also in the running, despite being the current patron saint of television. Can there be a Saint of All Media? We should know by Easter. Stay tuned.
