LEAD STORY
E-gads! Glut of e-mail could mean storage space race  (SearchWin2000.com)
Keeping track of your company's e-mail is an important business. Just ask the people at WorldCom and Enron. If you can't shred it, you have to store it, and with the number of corporate e-mails expected to hit 60 billion within three years, finding storage space could be your next headache.

NEWS
Patching negligence can get you sued (SearchSecurity.com)
A former DOJ prosecutor declares that enterprises indeed can be liable if their unsecured systems are used in a distributed denial-of-service attack and cause damages to another party. He also identifies potential liable parties and defines how they are liable based on breach of contract or negligence.

NEWS
Microsoft to issue less geeky security bulletins (InformationWeek)
Microsoft is taking a bite out of geekspeak. The company plans a security bulletin that's more legible to the layperson in an effort to raise awareness among small businesses and home users. Terms like "buffer overflow" and other IT esoterica won't be in there. The security newsletter should be out sometime this month -- it is an addition to Microsoft's existing Security Update newsletter.

The sea of patches
You may think the Patch Sea that Microsoft has created resembles the Dead Sea -- life cannot exist there. Or maybe it makes you think of the Mediterranean Sea -- connected to all those wonderfully interesting places. Trustworthy computing created the Sea, and the company issues more patches every few weeks. How are you dealing with it? Are you floating along on the Dead Sea or on the Mediterranean?

ASK SERDAR YEGULALP
My computer's addicted to Clearmem.exe!
Dear Serdar:
I'm using a Pentium 4 1.5GHz with 256MB RAMB-US PC800 memory and Windows 2000 Professional (Service Pack 3). I recently added a second hard drive, reformatted both drives and reinstalled all my software. Since then I have frequently run out of available physical memory and have had to run Clearmem.exe numerous times each day. It almost seems that once I began to use Clearmem.exe the computer seems addicted to it. Is this a sign of faulty memory modules or something else?

Webcast follow-up Q&As

THE MISSING LINK
When hackers become hacked: Mitnick site nailed

Like punk rock fans spitting on, throwing bottles at, and flipping off their favorite band, computer hackers have hailed their hero in their own unique way -- by breaking into his Web site. During the last couple of weeks, two people have hacked Kevin Mitnick's security consulting firm's site. One defaced it with a work of vandalism that read "welcome back to freedom," while another asked Mitnick for a job. Mitnick, the high priest of hack who just came back after years of online exile, didn't nitpick about the intrusions. He said that no customer data was compromised, so he's not calling the law.
