About a year ago, nearly 1,000 of you joined forces with our editorial team to grade Microsoft as a technology innovator, market leader and corporate business partner. The result was the first annual SearchWin2000.com Microsoft Report Card.
The report chronicled your biggest gripes -- security, licensing and customer support. And it gave credit where credit was due: to the first-rate Windows 2000 client and server product lines. We predicted widespread adoption of Active Directory by year-end and documented how confused you all were over the .NET branding of next-generation servers (renamed, thankfully, for the fourth and hopefully last time in January to simply Windows Server 2003).
Now it's time to take stock of Microsoft's performance over the past 12 months. Has Redmond addressed your security concerns? What benefits do you see from Active Directory? How do you rate XP, Windows 2000 Server, Exchange 2000 and other Microsoft products for quality, value, security and customer support? Is the product upgrade cycle more or less rational than it was one year ago?
The survey will take about ten minutes. Simply click here, and respond to our questions. We'll tally the results, compare your answers with last year, then release the findings at our Enterprise Windows Decisions conference May 16. The whole report will be published on our site in a Microsoft Report Card for 2003.
Of course, if you want to give me a preview of what you think, or offer suggestions for other user-based research, I'm always interested in your views and ideas.
Marilyn

Microsoft exec chimes in on corporate IM
Instant messaging isn't just the cool tool your teenage daughter uses to chat with her friends. IM is getting down to business, and Microsoft plans to be there when opportunity pings. MS exec Ed Simnett talks to SearchWin2000.com about how Windows admins should prepare for corporate IM. |

Companies at a crossroads on instant messaging
Corporate IM may be inevitable, but Windows IT admins say it still has some maturing to do before it's ready for prime time in the enterprise. |

Vendors: Enterprise IM has dues to pay
IM is going to be big -- some day. But this well-established personal technology still has many dues to pay before it becomes a mainstream business tool. Some key technical issues: product compatibility, the need for a common authentication and authorization model, and a server-based name space management system. |
