At least you need passwords to access a system. But this raises the following question: What happens if you have to access an NT 4.0 system and the user can't remember the administrator or alternate user password, and doesn't have an emergency repair disk? You could just reinstall, but isn't there a better way? >> CLICK for the full tip... http://www.searchWin2000.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci884693,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SECURING WIRELESS: WLAN BEST PRACTICES | by Roberta Bragg Wireless technologies are not something that stop at any traditional network boundary, so you cannot concentrate your security efforts for wireless at the boundaries. Instead, you must spread your security nets wide. You must consider and protect every device with a wireless network card: every wireless access point, every computer, every handheld, every bit that travels your network bandwidth, every user, and everywhere they go. To help you, security guru Roberta Bragg has put together some best practices for each of these. >> CLICK for the full tip... http://searchwindowsmanageability.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid33_gci880077,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DISABLE UNUSED ADAPTERS | by Tom Lancaster As growing numbers of corporations deploy wireless LANs with 802.11a or 802.11b, Windows users are finding more Network Interface Cards in their notebook computers. If you or users you support take your laptops home and plug the Ethernet adapter into a cable modem, or use the modem to dialup the Internet, this does not disable any wireless LAN adapters you may have installed. This means that your laptop may be vulnerable to a network-based attack through this adapter and it wouldn't enjoy the normal protection from your corporate firewall. >> CLICK for the full tip... http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci853861,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WHAT CAN I ASSUME HACKERS WILL TARGET? | Ask Roberta Bragg Dear Roberta: In light of terrorism I cannot depend on antivirus software to recognize new threats. The same can even be said of a firewall. I need to be prepared against any threat old or new without putting myself in a box. In order for that to happen, I must ask, is there any place on a computer a hacker must go in ordered to do his dirty work? And I don't mean the IP address. I mean the memory itself. >> CLICK here for Bragg's expert answer... http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid1_cid516960_tax285120,00.html Want more tips like this one? Thank heavens. But Microsoft is going to put additional digital rights management (DRM) in Windows Server 2003 and in the new Office 2003. Microsoft is calling it Windows Rights Management Services (RMS), and the goal is to secure corporate documents from any prying eyes (not in the least your own employees). This is potentially good for the company, but perhaps not so good for external investigators. >> CLICK for the full article... http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/originalContent/0,289142,sid1_gci884657,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= WHAT'S UP WITH CERTIFICATION? | Featured Topic What will the new slate of Windows certification exams mean to you?
