PROS AND CONS OF ACTIVE DIRECTORY | by James Michael Stewart

Some tout Active Directory as the best thing for networking since
twisted-pair cable. But not everything in the world of an Active
Directory domain-based network is fine and dandy. In fact, there are
several shortcomings of Active Directory that you should be aware of
before deploying a Windows 2000- or Windows 2003 Server-based Active
Directory domain in your organization.

THE POLITICS OF ACTIVE DIRECTORY | by Margie Semilof

How well will your Active Directory installation go? Maybe you're
prepared for the procedure, but are you prepared for the politics?
The power struggles going on in those nice offices upstairs can be
the difference between a smooth rollout and a nasty wipeout.

PARENT DOMAIN UPGRADE AFFECT CHILD DOMAIN? | Ask Paul Hinsberg

Dear Paul:
We have five NT4 DCs (domain controllers) and are planning an upgrade
to Active Directory. That is our network for about 200 employees. We
also have a child domain newly installed using Windows 2000 from the
start for about 45,000 users. My question is: How will our upgrade of
the parent domain from NT4 to Win2k AD affect the Win2k child domain
and the AD forest structure? What is the best course of action?

Mark Minasi's new book, "Mastering Windows Server 2003," will be
coming out soon. And we'd like to offer you the free download of
chapter one before the book even hits the shelves! In his new book,
Mark updates his best-selling "Mastering Windows 2000 Server, Fourth

trademark clear, step-by-step fashion. And where many books focus
solely on one version of an OS, "Mastering Windows Server 2003" is
