Newsflash: Reuters steals Microsoft's Greenwich guy (CNET)
Reuters has some big news for Microsoft -- something along the lines of, "We've got your Greenwich guy!" The news organization has hired David Gurle, who is Microsoft's director of program management for the Real Time Communication group. He'll be Reuters' global head of collaboration services. Reuters was the first firm to test Greenwich and has used the technology to create Reuters Messaging IM service.

DOS, we hardly knew ye
Last week when we published the seemingly silly, yet ultimately
controversial, Oops! True IT blooper #97: DOS, we hardly knew ye, we
could have never anticipated the onslaught of user responses it would
generate. Here are a few responses that we particularly enjoyed reading.

Disable Alt+Print Screen functionality
Iamtig writes:
To prevent unauthorized capturing of sensitive information, I am looking for a way to disable the Alt+Print Screen functionality that enables the capturing of screen images in the clipboard, which then can be pasted into an application that will allow printing of this information. I have prevented the printing in the application, but a computer-savvy person will still be able to print screen images. Is there a way to disable this functionality?
ASK ED TITTEL
Sys admin or network engineer path?
Dear Ed:
I want to start gaining some certifications to reinforce my "hands on" experience and move up the IT ladder with more than just general experience. I was thinking of A+ and Network+, then MCSE and Cisco to follow? And maybe Novell, which seems like it is going away? I would like to become a systems administrator or network engineer at some point. Could you please offer me some advice?

Sites under siege from news-hungry surfers
![]()
You've no doubt heard pundits compare the current conflict in Iraq to the Gulf War, but one difference you're not hearing about is the role of the Web. Whereas virtually no one went online for war news back in 1991, news sites can hardly keep up with the traffic in 2003. MSNBC's site has gotten downright turgid; it experienced a 114% surge in visitors Monday, compared with other recent Mondays. Time.com is having a time dealing with all the surfers -- its Web site got about 228% more popular, while Reuters.com saw a nearly 400% spike. But the cyber-champ has to be the online arm of the al-Jazeera Arabic television network. Its traffic jumped 679%, an increase that included a 2,230% spurt in the number of American surfers clicking in, although DoS attacks, as well as a domain "hackjacking," have since turned Aljazeera.net to mush.
