LEAD STORY
New file system in Windows 2003 could cut TCO  (SearchWin2000.com)
The usually unheralded but hard-working Distributed File System (DFS) in Windows is getting a makeover. The new, improved DFS -- which will make its debut with Windows Server 2003 -- could, among other things, help trim TCO.

NEWS
Windows Server 2003 struggles with Win2k, the times (InfoWorld)
Microsoft has sent Windows Server 2003 to manufacturing and claims that it's the highest quality Windows server OS ever released. But customers' enthusiasm is curbed. Yankee Group has conducted a study that shows 12% of the existing Windows installed base will adopt the new OS in the next year. The fact that Windows 2000 is pretty solid, the lackluster economy and the war in Iraq are combining to keep Windows Server 2003 down.

NEWS
Microsoft to sell 'no frills' business software (CNET)
Microsoft's Business Solutions unit is stocking the bargain table with a set of business-management apps that will cost about 30% less than the "frills" versions. This software, most of it available in April, will be for firms with fewer than 100 employees and less than $25 million in annual revenue.

ASK TONY NORTHRUP
Why won't user profiles load via the VPN?
Dear Tony:
I run a Win2k server and want to allow my users to access their desktops via VPN, just as if they were at work (mainly MS Outlook). We can VPN just fine, but the users' profiles won't load. We are using Win2k Advanced Server and NT workstations. Most VPN clients are Windows 98.

THE MISSING LINK
MS monopolizes another market -- the goof market

It's doubtful that Bill Gates will be putting this plaque on his wall -- Microsoft cornered the dumb-moment market for IT in 2002, according to Business 2.0 magazine's "101 Dumbest Moments in Business." A half dozen of Redmond's red-faced moments made the list, including the "Windows XP convert" who turned out to be a model reading a freelance writer's copy, the MSN ad campaign that involved plastering New York with butterfly stickers, and Gates' and CEO Steve Ballmer's repeated attempts to explain the company's .NET strategy. Yahoo had the highest single spot on the list among IT firms, scoring the No. 2 dumb doozy of 2002 by virtue of its $5 million payout to the angry yodeler. The yodeler yelled when Yahoo kept using his voice in their TV ads; he had thought the company would only use it occasionally. After getting $5 million, he changed his tune from "Yahoo!" to "Yippee!"
