It was an easy decision for hip clothing chain Urban Outfitters to switch from a Unix-based to a Windows-based terminal services solution. The terminal software was easier to administer, and net admins could customize client features without knowing scripting language. Better user support for 92 retail outlets in five countries was a nice bonus.

Analysts: Microsoft lacks trust in Trustworthy Computing (Reuters)
Do you think Microsoft's products are secure? If you do, more than 75% of the software security experts at big companies disagree with you, according to a Forrester Research study. Analysts also found that even though Microsoft has provided fixes for flaws well in advance of attacks, most admins won't apply them because they're afraid the patches might bring down their systems, and they don't have the time or resources to manage the patch tsunami.

NT 4.0 users upset over MS patch decision (IDG)
Users of Windows NT 4.0 are wondering about Microsoft's commitment to support the operating system through the end of 2004 after it declined to patch a security vulnerability in the OS last week. A vulnerability in the Remote Procedure Call protocol could expose computers running Windows 2000, XP and NT 4.0 to a denial of service attack. Windows NT 4.0 customers were advised to put affected systems behind a firewall that blocks traffic on TCP/IP port 135, the port used by the flawed RPC Endpoint Mapper process.

Teen got too much game, gets gamey

Mamas, don't let your babies grow up to be gamers. One mom in Romania could write a country song with that title. She recently got her son back -- he'd been held captive by his intense love for a computer game. The 14-year-old spent nine days and nights gaming and probably would have been game for more had he not collapsed, at an Internet cafe, from physical and mental exhaustion. His mom says he lost 18 pounds, missed a big chunk of school and forgot about the joys of soap and deodorant, thanks to his online obsession. She's pushing government officials to bar kids from Internet cafes after 10 p.m.
