Microsoft announced plans to release a development kit for its Next-Generation Secure Computing Base at a conference this fall. NGSCB, also known as Palladium, provides for trusted operations on a PC and requires new hardware. The kit enables developers to work with code and develop applications for the technology. Microsoft said the kit will be an API set that functions with "standard" programming languages.

Windows system shows up on fastest supercomputer list (CNET)
A Windows-based system has made a rare appearance on the list of the 500 fastest supercomputers. Built at the Cornell Theory Center, the system is a cluster of Dell servers with 384 Xeon processors. Hewlett-Packard boasts 159 systems on the list with IBM trailing by one. Intel, meanwhile, is also well represented with 119 Xeon-based supercomputers on the list. Sun, meanwhile, has only nine systems on the list. Researchers from Germany's University of Mannheim and researchers at the University of Tennessee compile the list.

Name that framework
Microsoft's framework for a compound document technology. Briefly, a compound document is something like a display desktop that can contain visual and information objects of all kinds: text, calendars, animations, sound, motion video, 3-D, continually updated news, controls, and so forth. Each desktop object is an independent program entity that can interact with a user and also communicate with other objects on the desktop.

ASK CHRISTA ANDERSON
One machine as DC and terminal server?
Dear Christa:
I am wondering if I can get away with having the server as a domain controller and well as a terminal server. All the logons occur in the morning. Once everyone is on, they stay on, so I expect a performance hit in the morning. Am I going about this the proper way, or should I suck it up and get another box for a DC?

THE MISSING LINK
IRS workers tax computers, Uncle Sam's patience

Still waiting for your federal income tax refund? Maybe the person responsible for handling your return has been busy elf bowling. According to a federal study, Internal Revenue Service workers are often busy using the Net to send personal e-mail, visit naughty Web sites and play games; thousands of IRS computers, the study states, are being used for such surfing. Apparently, last year's "crackdown" on inappropriate Internet use within the agency didn't have much effect. But perhaps there's one good thing to take from all this: The "taxman" is human after all.
