In Windows Server 2003, Active Directory has finally come of age and shown itself to be the mature technology it has always been hyped to be. This tip gives you a quick overview of a detailed paper that Microsoft has released on the state of Active Directory in Windows Server 2003. >>Click here for the full tip: http://www.searchWin2000.com/tip/1,289483,sid1_gci911176,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= SINGLE VS. MULTI-FOREST AD DESIGN | by Meredith B. Derby If you can't see the forest through the trees in AD security, never fear. In this SearchWindowsManageability.com interview, Aelita Software CEO Ratmir Timashev explains how the number of forests relates to Active Directory's security. Aelita worked with Microsoft to identify the recent domain trust vulnerability. >>Click here for the full tip: http://searchwindowsmanageability.techtarget.com/tip/1,289483,sid33_gci810180,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= DO I NEED AD TO USE EFS?, PART 2 | Ask Roberta Bragg Dear Roberta: In the answer to the question: "Do I need AD to use EFS?" I think an important part is missing. The computer must not only be delegated for trust, but must also be able to access the public key of the user to be able to decrypt after receiving the file. >>Click here for Bragg's expert response: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid1_cid535196_tax285120,00.html =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= MIGRATE USER PASSWORDS FROM NT TO WIN2K | Ask Paul Hinsberg Dear Paul: I have used MS' migration tool and it works great, but I don't recall or know if passwords can be maintained after the migration from an NT domain to Win2k. I am running AD, and the first domain migration worked great, but I noticed that the accounts had the "user must change password at next logon" selected. By unselecting this option, is the original password kept? Thanks. >>Click here for Hinsberg's expert response: http://searchwin2000.techtarget.com/ateQuestionNResponse/0,289625,sid1_cid537821_tax285115,00.html Want more tips like these last two? It all goes well, until I try to actually run any of the AD tools, such as AD Users and Computers, AD Domains and Trusts, etc. Then I get a pop-up window saying "Microsoft Management Console has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." I click "Send Error Report" but that is the end of it -- I cannot manage my Windows 2000 Active Directory from my laptop, even though I selected "Run as..." and specified a domain admins account on the Win2k AD. I can use Remote Control to connect to and manage an AD domain controller successfully. >>Help Bud out: http://searchwindowsmanageability.discussions.techtarget.com/[EMAIL PROTECTED]@.ee84c8b/309!viewtype=convDate&skip=&expand= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= 'UNDERSTANDING THE DIGITAL DASHBOARD' | Chapter of the Week Taken from 'The Administrator's Guide to SharePoint Portal Server 2001,' which was not written for programmers, this chapter will give you an introduction to the Digital Dashboard. This is most likely due to: a. Their passwords having been changed by a hacker b. An AD tree accessing an outdated user profile c. Your administrator changing your user rights and privileges d. A duplicate SPN (ServicePrincipalName) value in the AD tree e.
