THE MISSING LINK
Fired workers, probed employers

New research from the American Management Association, Clearswift and the ePolicy Institute finds that one in five U.S. companies have fired an employee for abusing corporate e-mail accounts. But workers aren't the only ones getting flamed. According to the report, some 14% of all organizations have been ordered to turn over copies of e-mail to a court or regulatory body. Looking for loopholes? Even while the monitoring of Internet-bound e-mail is near ubiquitous -- 90% of companies do it -- only 19% of businesses keep an eye on internal e-mail, which remains the most likely sort to get people in a snit, or a lawsuit.
