U.S. Independence Day -- July 4 -- is just around the corner. But for those of you working in enterprises running NT4, another independence day of sorts begins tomorrow, July 1. Or more precisely, begins in Redmond, Washington. That's when Microsoft is "free" from providing unpaid hotfix and paid incident support for NT workstations. In another six months, the software giant will be liberated from customer support for Exchange 5.5. Then, in 18 months, it's bye-bye to NT4 server support.

Hold the parade, sparklers and fireworks, please! I know many of you are just starting to think about a migration to Microsoft's newer (Windows 2000, Exchange 2000) or newest (Windows Server 2003, Exchange Server 2003) operating system and e-mail platform. We want to know how you are preparing for end-of-lifecycle support for NT4 and Exchange 5.5.

    • If 2003 is the year you are going to move off of NT4 and Exchange 5.5, what's your timetable?
    • Are you armed against potential problems with Microsoft's Premiere support?
    • If not, have you budgeted for extra support fees?
    • Or are you just going to ride the transition out and take your chances that nothing major runs amok while you upgrade?
Drop me a line and let me know your migration and support contingency plans.

    Marilyn
