Seven-year ditch: Microsoft to end NT4 workstation support (TechWeb)
If you've got Windows NT 4.0 workstations in your shop, maybe you can hear the ticking. Time's almost up to get help from Microsoft -- the company turns a deaf ear Tuesday to support calls for the graying workstations. NT 4.0 Server will enjoy support until New Year's Eve. Windows 98 is next on the plug-pulling list -- it's scheduled for a Jan. 16, 2004, cutoff.

ASK LAURA HUNTER
Blocking foreign servers from IPC$ on server
Dear Laura:
I noted on my network that foreign servers from another domain are being connecting to my local servers. The only resource used is IPC$. My first thought is that a virus is trying to establish the connection to propagate on my local network through open shares. How can I stop those servers from connecting?

THE MISSING LINK
Stampede crushes 'Do Not Call' site

In this age of ceaseless spam, it's nice to know that people still despise telemarketers with such passion. The "Do Not Call" Web site -- launched Friday by the Federal Trade Commission -- got so swamped with people tired of being offered a great deal on vinyl siding during dinner that the servers got slammed, making access virtually impossible. At one point Friday, the site was logging 1,000 transactions per second, and 370,000 users had registered by noon. An interesting twist: Some of the confirmation e-mails sent to registrants were blocked by ISPs as spam -- junk e-mails meet junk phone calls!
