LEAD STORY
Research: Windows could save 28% over Linux  (CNET)
A Giga research study, commissioned by Microsoft, concluded that enterprises could save up to 28% by developing certain applications on Windows rather than Linux. Giga looked at enterprises developing Web-based portals developed on Windows or Linux systems using J2EE tools. Critics point out, however, that Giga examined only 12 enterprises, and seven of those were running Windows, as opposed to five on the Linux/J2EE combination.

    IT SURVIVAL KIT
    Keeping DOS windows open
Yes, DOS. It's still around and we still need it. For example, if you want to run a PING test, you would open a DOS window using "command" in Run. Then you would type in your PING command, press Enter and -- poof -- the window closes in a flash before you have the time to read the results. This tip explains how you can keep those DOS windows from closing down on you before you can read them.

    THE MISSING LINK
RIAA strikes back against pirate menace

Got music on your PC that you haven't paid for? You may have some deleting -- and some apologizing -- to do. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) is going after online music pirates. The RIAA has filed more than 250 civil lawsuits against people it says have basically used the Net to steal and distribute copyrighted music, and the organization promises many more loads of litigation against as-yet unnamed users. The RIAA is also forgiving anyone who hasn't already been targeted, as long as they promise to delete their phonic booty and pledge to never, ever, ever download again.
