USE THE SHADOW COPY CLIENT | by Serdar Yegulalp

Shadow copy, one of the new features in Windows 2003, only works when
files are hosted on a Windows Server 2003 volume. Normally the server
administrator is the only one who can access shadow copies or restore
them for users. This isn't too much of a problem if you have an
administrator on call a good deal of the time, but there will almost
certainly be times when a user will need to access shadow copies for
himself.

KEEP THE CORE SYSTEM IN RAM | by Matthew Laccetti

Windows XP takes portions of the operating system, applications and
data files that aren't currently needed in RAM and temporarily stores
the data on the hard disk in the paging file. If you have a
considerable amount of RAM in your system, you can improve system
performance by preventing the operating system from sending user-mode
and kernel-mode drivers to the paging file.

KEEPING DOS WINDOWS OPEN | by Jay Rumanek

DOS: It's still around and we still need it. For example, if you want
to run a PING test, you would open a DOS window using "command" in
Run. Then you would type in your PING command, press Enter and --
poof -- the window closes in a flash before you have the time to read
the results. It's the same thing for any other DOS command you might
want to use for diagnostic work.
The solution? Read this tip to find out.

INSTALL PROGRAMS WITH ELEVATED PRIVILEGES | Ask Jerry Honeycutt

Dear Jerry:
If I restrict all local users from the desktop admin group, but I
need to install something for the user, what would you suggest I do
to get around that restriction, so I don't have to log in as myself?

ROCK N' ROLLBACK | IT Challenge

The NTFS log file is a circular log of all file operations kept on
disk so that unsuccessful operations can be rolled back safely. If
the log fills up, all NTFS file operations are suspended until the
log is cycled through and flushed out to disk. To address the problem
you can:

a. Reset the file using your Control Panel
b. Increase the size of the NTFS log file by using the CHKDSK tool
c. Upgrade from a single disk to a striped RAID array
d. Both b and c
e. Play air-guitar to the XP startup theme
