  •  The news, it is a-changin'

    by Will Hurwitz, Assistant Editor

    The news, it is a-changin'.

That's a song we've been singing at SearchWin2000.com for a week, ever since we rebuilt our site's news section. We hope you like the major overhaul, which improves the news page's functionality and usability.

The news is now organized by date, which makes it easier for members to find stories that interest them and to locate those stories again later. You'll find one week's worth of stories on the main news page. For older stories, just follow the archive link at the bottom of the page.

At the start of the news page, is a "top story" that News Editor John Hogan selects as the most significant Windows news of the day. That's the one you should read if you have time for nothing else.

Speaking of John Hogan, don't forget to check out his weekly news analysis in our Friday Windows Week newsletter. John's controversial and humorous column has attracted a lot of attention from around the Web and from our own members as well. Check out his most recent commentary on the Microsoft-Sun rivalry.

We hope you enjoy our fresh news page and John's column. Please e-mail us with any comments or feedback on the recent additions to our site.

Big-iron Windows in the data center?
by Marilyn Cohodas, Senior Site Editor

Check out the articles, tips, white papers and resources in this week's featured topic and see if big-iron Windows could -- or should -- be in your future.

    Categories: Management Tools and Solutions
A SearchWin2000.com member asks, "I have been playing around with the disk quota management for users' home folders on the file server, and it's working fine. Is there a way to define quota for local/global group on a shared folder? I am using Win2k's default quota management."

    This Week: Expert advice
    >> Ask Paul Hinsberg: When are multiple domains better than one?
When, if ever, should one consider multiple domains for the enterprise? Currently, we have all users in a single domain. Our European sites are requesting a domain for each country. Our primary application program is from J.D. Edwards, and we are using Lotus Notes. With Win2000, I don't see much advantage, if any, to going to multiple domains. Can you please comment?
    >> Ask Tony Northrup: Linux-based Web hosting
What are the advantages and disadvantages of using a Linux-based Web hosting service?
    >> Ask Scott Schnoll: Customizing Exchange 2000 OWA logon page
How can the Exchange 2000 version of OWA be customized to provide a logon page (with a disclaimer, etc.) so it looks something like Exchange 2003's OWA? It's OK with me to create a separate site to do this.

    Tip of the Week:
One of the less well-documented quirks of Windows 2000 Professional (and Server) is its short memory span for individual folder configurations. After a certain number of folders have their settings changed, the oldest folder is dropped from the list and loses its settings. This tip will show you how to fix this problem by changing a simple registry setting.
    >> Maintain consistent folder views
