BATCH FILE THAT MAKES HOTFIXES EASY | by Aneil Singh

Are you uncomfortable using Automatic Update for your Microsoft
production server hotfixes? Or are you unable to use it due to
firewall rules and security? Then testing your updates in QA before
deploying to production servers is always a wise idea. With this
process you can insure all your servers are running your last release
of hotfixes within 30 minutes per server with only one reboot. This
process will save you critical downtime -- and that's always a big
plus with management!

MORE RPC ATTACKS LOOM FOR WINDOWS | by Tom Lancaster

Microsoft recently released security bulletin MS03-039, entitled
"Buffer Overrun In RPCSS Service Could Allow Code Execution," which
essentially documents more problems with RPC code. Security and virus
experts have been quick to note that because existing Blaster, Nachi
and Welchia code can be easily altered to exploit these new
vulnerabilities, new worms or other malware could appear in days, not
weeks. How can organizations head off such attacks?

WHEN IS IT TIME TO CALL THE COPS? | Ask Robert Bragg

Dear Roberta:
I worked for the District Attorney and I am a computer consultant on
the side. A friend just asked me if there was any way to look at a
conversation that took place between two IMers. She works as a child
care associate and believes that there may have been Internet
pedophilia activity going on in a child's home that could have been
recorded on IM last evening. Does the local computer hold some
remnant of a file either in the temporary Internet files or cookies
or something that could be found? Could she, with some law
enforcement authority, take these persons' hard drives and extract
such information?

WHO'S AFRAID OF MICROSOFT? | Column

The fallout -- and intrigue -- generated by a research report
critical of Microsoft continues. While not exactly the Pentagon
Papers, a high-tech trade group's scathing indictment of a software
"monoculture" dominated by Windows cost the lead author his job and
created an industry buzz that has yet to die down.
