IS IT FAKE OR IS IT MICROSOFT? | by Tom Lancaster

If my e-mail inbox is typical of a normal technical user's (and I
believe it is), I'm not the only recent recipient of ostensibly
security-related e-mail from "Microsoft-like" addresses. The names
include: Microsoft Security Division, Microsoft Security Update,
Microsoft Security, and so forth. Here are some rules you can use to
determine whether any e-mail that claims to originate from Microsoft
is legitimate.

STOP USERS WHO EMPLOY EFS | Adesh Rampat

Encrypting File System (EFS), which is available in both Windows 2000
an XP Professional, lets users secure data on a hard drive using
public-key encryption. A user does not have to be an expert in file
encryption to use this facility, so some users may try working with
EFS to hide illicit material.

BEST BACKUP PLANS FOR THE DESKTOP | Laura E. Hunter

A good desktop backup plan is absolutely integral to a well-secured
network. Often, it's the only way to restore business operations
after a security breach or other disaster. Whether you are dealing
with a physical issue like a power outage or a malicious network
attack, archiving and restoring your company's data can mean the
difference between business continuity and business failure.

TRACKING WHO DELETES FILES ON A WIN2K SERVER | Ask Robert Bragg

Dear Roberta:
We have a Win2k file server. When someone deletes a file, what is the
Event ID number, and what must be done to see who deletes or moves
the file or folder? Is there any software that can track this
information?

CAN YOU NAME THE MICROSOFT PARTNER? | Linux Speak

What Microsoft partner said the following:

"There's a big question out there right now: 'What's the installed
base of NT users going to do?' In the next 12 to 24 months, we think
more migrations (to Linux) are going to be happening. That's because
Linux has caused everyone to rethink the core economics of the data
