IT Overview: Professional Developers Conference 2003
    >> Gates puts a face on far-away Longhorn
On Monday, Bill Gates showed off the interface for Microsoft's next version of Windows, which goes by the code-name Longhorn.
    >> Next Visual Studio will put code on a diet
Code-saving features in Whidbey, the next version of Microsoft's Visual Studio developer tool set, will have trickle-down benefits for IT administrators, Microsoft says.
    >> .NET tools to be bundled in next SQL Server
After two decades with the same underlying technology, SQL Server is in need of a facelift, Microsoft says. At the Professional Developers Conference, Microsoft vice president Gordon Mangione revealed some early features of Yukon, the next version of the database management system.

    Tip of the Week:
When a service pack or a hotfix is installed in Windows 2000 and XP, the user has the option of backing up the replaced files in the event something goes awry. However, once you've tested a given fix and found it to be working perfectly, you can either move or delete the backup files. Over time, the accumulation of backup files can put a dent in the free space the system directory uses. If you want to free up this space, here are some options.
