NEWS
Microsoft buying Google? (KOMO)
The New York Times has reported that Microsoft has had recent talks with Google about partnerships -- or possibly a merger -- with the popular Web search engine. Privately held Google has been preparing for an initial public offering on the stock market.

NEWS
Microsoft tweaks pair of recent patches (InformationWeek)
Microsoft has rereleased security patches for Windows Messenger Service and ActiveX because of problems with the earlier versions. The patches were rated "critical" when they were released in an Oct. 15 alert. Those who successfully installed patches from that alert do not need to re-install the new ones, which are available from the Windows Update Service.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
It's not Exchange's fault
Chest pains often mean heart attacks, but not always. Similarly, e-mail problems often mean trouble with the Exchange server, but not always. There are other systems that interact with the Exchange server that you might need to examine first. This tip looks at those "behind the scenes" systems and possible problems that can occur.

ASK ROBERTA BRAGG
Tackling VPN security without firewalls
Dear Roberta:
With this latest round of worms it became apparent that our biggest exposure was NOT our front door (the firewall), but rather the back door (laptops brought in from vendors/home, VPN users without firewalls). How are most organizations tackling the issue of protecting those devices? We've tried to mandate antivirus software and firewalls, but how can we technically force compliance?

THE MISSING LINK
Can you hear me now? Eww!

Sometimes you just have to let it go. A New York man learned that the hard way. He was on a suburban train last week when he went to the loo to make a phone call. Can you see where this is headed? Yep, he dropped his cell phone into the toilet. At that point, he should have realized that he'd made a sacrifice to the porcelain (or, in this case, aluminum) god, but he tried to get the phone out. When his arm got stuck in the hole of the bowl, rescuers had to use the "jaws of life" to free him, which required shutting down the track during rush hour. The guy's phone is still somewhere in the bowels of the train's septic tank -- right next to his dignity.
