END THE EFS WARS | by Serdar Yegulalp

All versions of Windows 2000 support the Encrypted File System (EFS),
an extension to NTFS that allows users to encrypt files on-disk. EFS
uses system-level certificates to encrypt the data. However, the
algorithms used in these encryption certificates vary with each
version of Windows 2000 (including XP and Windows .NET Server 2003).
Because of this, there can be problems decrypting EFS-stored files
across versions of Windows.

A SPACE SAVING IDEA | by Serdar Yegulalp

When a service pack or a hotfix is installed in Windows 2000 and XP,
the user has the option of backing up the replaced files in the event
something goes awry. However, once you've tested a given fix and
found it to be working perfectly, you can either move or delete the
backup files. Over time, the accumulation of backup files can put a
dent in the free space the system directory uses. Here's what to do
if you want to free up this space.

SECURITY POLICIES SHOULD WORK FROM HOME TOO | by Mike Chapple

No matter what the size of your IT department, chances are that
you've been called upon to support one or more members of the growing
phalanx of telecommuters. These "work at home" individuals range from
full-time home office warriors to the overworked executive who tries
to knock out a few e-mails between his shower and morning coffee.
Let's face it -- telecommuters are a reality and they're here to
stay. Have you taken them into account when planning your security
policy?

DOES WINDOWS 2000 SUPPORT APM OR ACPI? | Ask Jerry Honeycutt

Dear Jerry:
I am evaluating the hardware in our office to ensure it is compatible
with Win2k, and I noticed that some of the motherboards report
Advanced Configuration and Power Interface (ACPI) and some report
Advanced Power Management (APM). Will APM suffice the ACPI
requirement of Win2k?
