NEWS
Microsoft vs. Novell, round two? (SearchWin2000.com)
Some are suggesting the planned acquisition of SuSE Linux AG by Novell Inc. could reignite an old battle between Novell and Microsoft. Novell owned a competing network operating system for file and print services, which lost market share to Windows in the mid-1990s. It's a blow Novell has struggled to recover from.

NEWS
Microsoft's WLAN play changes game (SearchMobileComputing.com)
Microsoft's arrival in the wireless LAN management space with a product that simplifies Wi-Fi deployment and setup is evidence that not only is the software giant looking to expand its presence in the enterprise, but it's also looking to push smaller vendors out of the market.

IT SURVIVAL KIT
End the EFS wars
All versions of Windows 2000 support the Encrypted File System (EFS), an extension to NTFS that allows users to encrypt files on-disk. EFS uses system-level certificates to encrypt the data. However, the algorithms used in these encryption certificates vary with each version of Windows 2000 (as well as XP and Windows Server 2003).

THE MISSING LINK
Tech downturn brings a slump in humor, too

Top techies have long been known as pranksters, but it seems that, when revenues are down, Silicon Valley's full of frowns. A former Apple Computer employee turned comic explains it this way: When you're successful you're irreverent and when you're not you're obnoxious. Currently Intel, IBM and Sun are sponsoring satirical Web sites that poke fun at competitors and themselves -- but unless profits skyrocket the only thing that might put the "silly" back in Silicon Valley would be installing Moe, Larry and Curly on IBM's board of directors. Nyuk nyuk nyuk.
