NEWS
Microsoft to reveal Office's XML schemas (CNET)
Starting Dec. 5, Microsoft will reveal the types of XML tags it uses in Office 2003. Experts say that customers are demanding to know which schemas are in the new suite of applications, but the move will also give competitors insight into the inner workings of the software. However, that inside knowledge could be fleeting because Microsoft will keep under wraps how the schemas are altered in future versions.

NEWS
Small Business Server 2003 too pricey for some (InternetNews.com)
With only half of all small to mid-sized businesses (SMBs) running a server operating system, Microsoft has a huge potential market for its new SMB version of Windows. However, many of these companies are feeling the pinch of the recession more than large companies, according to Jupiter research. That makes Microsoft's Small Business Server 2003 too expensive for some SMBs.

CHAPTER OF THE WEEK
PKI: Deployment issues and decisions
PKI (public-key infrastructure) enables the secure exchange of data over otherwise unsecured media, including the Internet. PKI is the underlying cryptographic security mechanism for digital certificates and certificate directories, which are used to authenticate a message sender. This chapter from the book Understanding PKI, Second Edition discusses issues you need to consider before deploying PKI, such as trust models, in-sourcing vs. out-sourcing; build vs. buy and standard vs. proprietary solutions.

THE MISSING LINK
Armoires -- the anti-cubicles

After a long holiday weekend in the United States, some people may be reluctant to lace up once again for the rat race. If anyone is missing from Cubicle Row today, they just may be hangin' with their clothes. A normally normal man in Germany didn't show up at the decorating firm where he worked, and no one could get in touch with him. Alarmed by the reliable employee's suspicious absence, the firm sent police to his house -- where they found him sitting in his armoire. He told them he couldn't handle going into the office that day and just needed some peace and quiet. Haven't we all been there? Well, maybe not in the armoire.
