LEAD STORY
Can I quote you on that? Top IT quotes of 2003  (SearchWin2000.com)
They range from pithy and provocative to positive, petty and predictable. They're some of the most notable quotables from IT in 2003. From Linus Torvalds ripping into SCO, to a Microsoft manager's surprisingly "kind words" for open source, to a noted Windows expert's declaration of IT's biggest problem -- they said it all in 2003.

NEWS
Microsoft aims to make spammers pay (BBC)
Microsoft researchers are working on a way to stem the rising tide of spam by forcing spammers to use more computing resources for each message they send. The idea is to make it much more expensive for spammers to do business because they would need to get more machines and more bandwidth to keep sending out the same number of e-mails.

THE MISSING LINK
Web auctioneers perfect 'regifting'

The sitcom Seinfeld may have coined the term "regifting," but sites such as eBay have perfected the practice. The Web auction site -- and smaller ones like it -- have given people a place to peddle their unwanted holiday gifts, rather than risk getting caught recycling them through their circle of family and friends. Officials from eBay say auction traffic spikes noticeably in January. You'd just better hope one of those surfers isn't Aunt Millie making sure you're not hawking those plaid socks she gave you!
