DISABLING THE SHUTDOWN EVENT TRACKER IN WIN XP | Serdar Yegulalp

The Shutdown Event Tracker is a feature new to both Windows XP
Professional and Windows 2003 Server. Whenever an administrator
signals a shutdown of the computer -- whether from the local console
or remotely through a Remote Desktop session -- the administrator is
prompted for some descriptive information about why the system was
shut down. This feature can be useful during audits, but not so much
when you are setting the machine up.

DEALING WITH ACTIVE SCRIPTING IN IE (AND ELSEWHERE) | Tom Lancaster

Third-party security mailing lists have been abuzz recently with
stories and notifications about a complex IE vulnerability that a
Chinese researcher discovered and exposed during the last week of
November. The vulnerability could compromise systems when victims
simply view a Web page.

AVOID USELESS WINDOWS 2000 PERFORMANCE 'TWEAKS' | Serdar Yegulalp

Thanks to a combination of bad journalism and ineffective research,
word has been spreading in the industry about a number of so-called
"performance tweaks" for Windows 2000 and XP. Some of these tweaks
were functional at one time but have since been replaced in recent
Service Packs with intelligent core logic that tunes the system's
memory more effectively.

WINDOWS CAN'T ACCESS REGISTRY INFORMATION | Ask Serdar Yegulalp

Dear Serdar,
On our user workstations, every couple of hours we get an App Log
entry for Userenv, Event 1000, User System, which reads: "Windows
cannot access the registry information at
domain.netsysvoldomain.netPolicies{31B2F340-016D-11D2-945F-00C04FB984F9}Machineregistry.pol
with (5)." This error is strange in that the user can access the policy file
directly, so this appears to be a problem just on startup. I have tried to chase this
down but to no avail. The most prevalent reference is to DNS but we have no DNS issues
that I can find.

JARRING JARGON -- IT NEVER AT A LOSS FOR WORDS | Article

Automagically. Co-opetition. And, of course, productize. Those are
just a few of the "words" that high-tech vendors and their legions of
publicists have invented, adopted and inflicted over the years.
Despite widespread cynicism about this industry-specific language,
new words and phrases pop up every year.
