Microsoft's top lawyer says that the software maker told the European Union it would be willing to bundle rival media players with Windows -- for both the European and U.S. markets -- as part of an antitrust settlement. The offer was not accepted, and the EU later decided on a record $611 million fine and other sanctions.

The decision by longtime Microsoft partner Hewlett-Packard to expand enterprise Linux offerings on its hardware will put pressure on Microsoft to lower the price of Windows, one analyst says. Meanwhile, HP downplayed the competition it has created through its new partnership with Linux vendor Novell.
