Microsoft scales back Longhorn for 2006 launch

Microsoft will cut back on some of the features it had planned for the next version of Windows so that the software maker can hit a target release of the first half of 2006. Longhorn will still feature a new file system, graphics engine and Web services architecture, but they will not be as robust in their initial iteration.

This AOL contest offers the best of both worlds: a free Porsche and payback for spam. AOL obtained a red Boxster convertible as part of a settlement with a sporty spammer, and has offered the car as a kind of online door prize. In eight days, more than one million people have thrown their AOL screen names into the virtual hat. Either they really hate spam or really love Porsches. The deadline to enter is 11:59 p.m. EDT Thursday, with the winner likely to be announced during the week of April 19.
