  •  From the Editor: Longhorn's Little Big Horn?

    by Brent Sheets, Editor

What's that loud mooing, you ask? That's Longhorn getting its Windows File System "pillar" removed. Those pillars are huge and I'm afraid it hurts. Longhorn appears noticeably thinner after this surgery, don't you think? Not to worry, says Microsoft, customers of Software Assurance will get WinFS when it sees the light of day sometime "after the Longhorn release." Now there's a firm date for you.

Microsoft is backpedaling -- er, backporting -- a couple of other wobbling pillars. Redmond now says that prior to Longhorn, they'll make Avalon and Indigo, the graphics and communication subsystems, available for Windows XP and Windows Server 2003. Let's hope these don't eventually sidestep the shipping version, too.

Windows XP could become Longhorn's Little Big Horn. After all, why bother to upgrade to the full version of Longhorn if you can patch XP with "decoupled" pillars and have the same thing, right? Wrong, of course. Longhorn is much more, but Microsoft is not known for sparkling clarity when describing their new technology. Need I mention .NET?

Which brings up another point: Why decouple in the first place? I'm probably in the minority, but I'd prefer Longhorn to be Longhorn, with all the goodies intact. Sure, it requires some beefy hardware and might possibly take until 2008, but who cares? Get it right -- we can wait.

How many key elements can you selectively remove, or backport, before Longhorn is no longer Longhorn? What's your take? Let me know.

    Dear Laura,
Our domain controller is extremely defragmented and Windows defrag utility doesn't want to defrag it. There's more than 15% free space on the drive. Also, I'm concerned about data loss -- should I be? What's the most efficient way to defrag to avoid any data loss?
