Viruses aimed at Microsoft rise sharply
[Reuters]
E-mail worms and viruses aimed at Windows systems have exploded in the past year, according to a new study from Symantec. The antivirus vendor reported 5,000 new cases of Microsoft-targeted malicious activity from January to June, a 400% jump over the same period the year before.

FEATURED TOPIC:  Windows Management -- 10 tips in 10 minutes
Here are 10 tips for the future of Windows management. Look for a new Microsoft Operations Manager, Systems Management Server service, feature packs and Software Update Services.

CHAPTER OF THE WEEK:  'Data model and type system'
If your job tasks ever touch XML, you will benefit from the knowledge in this chapter, from the book "XQuery: The XML Query Language," by Michael Brundage. Get a crash course in XML data models, structures, atomic types, node kinds, conversions and other key concepts of XQuery.

TIP:  Why cluster?
Clustering isn't as much about the front-end of an application as the back-end. There are precious few applications that will care whether your database lives on a cluster or not. In fact, applications by and large shouldn't care. What matters more is the result of a server meltdown, or when you really have a lot of users asking for a lot of data at one time. That's where clustering comes into play. There are normally two types of clustering: Load balancing and Failover. This short article from InformIT's SQL Server Reference Guide examines the reasons for clustering and some of the system requirements.

The Missing Link

Inventor finds job for nose
[Reuters]
"Look ma, no hands!" Normally a declaration made behind the handlebar of a bicycle or during the ascent of a roller coaster, this same cry may soon be heard in front of the computer monitor. An inventor in Canada claims to have made a hands-free mouse that follows your nose, not your fingers. How do you click? A blink of the right or left eye corresponds to the right or left click of the mouse. The inventor says the "nouse," as it's called, will be great for people with disabilities or for gamers who want to kill virtual villains literally in the blink of an eye. But here's a nosy question: What happens if you sneeze? Does the computer explode?
