Hiding or revealing user names in the Windows XP logon screen
[Serdar Yegulalp]
The default Windows XP logon screen displays a selectable list of all the user accounts available on the system. Normally, all the accounts present (except for the Administrator account) are shown. This 'friendly' XP interface was designed with home users in mind, but you may want to keep the accounts hidden. Find out how to toggle between revealed/hidden accounts in this tip.
Start Windows Explorer with admin privileges in a non-admin account
[Keith Wong]
Sometimes, administrators become frustrated when they have to troubleshoot a regular user account because they do not have any admin privileges. Here's a user-submitted tip explaining how to get around this issue.
Install Trivial File Transfer Protocol (TFTP) on Windows 2000
[Scott McKenzie]
Windows 2000 does not include a standard TFTP server that can be installed via Add/Remove Windows Components, unlike DNS, DHCP, etc. However, a TFTP server is provided as part of the Remote Installation Services (RIS) package. You don't need (or want) to install all of RIS just to get TFTP. This user-submitted tip provides instructions to manually install only the TFTP server service.
Use crash dumps to troubleshoot hardware/OS issues
[Serdar Yegulalp]
When Windows 2000 and XP encounter a serious system problem, the result is what has become known as the "Blue Screen of Death" or BSOD -- a screen of white text on a blue background that provides information about why the system crashed. Microsoft introduced a special function into the PS/2 keyboard mouse driver that allows the user to manually initiate a BSOD / dump action.
