Thanks, didn't think of that. I've meanwhile solved the problem most unelegantly by 
putting in a Mach64 video card instead of the S3 964. This was more of a shot in the 
dark, since I didn't really think it would help any, but lo and behold Gnome appeared 
and ran flawlessly! I am now left to wonder:
- Is the S3 card defect? (Seems unlikely, since it was displaying everything but the 
"windows" perfectly)
- Is there a bug in the drivers for this particular card?
- Was it something completely unrelated to the card itself which by pure chance got 
resolved by the exchange?

What do y'all think?
