You knew I'd have ideas...

 Not to champion other distros, but I really like the way Debian
documents their optimizations, moved config files, or whatever.
 /usr/share/doc/<package> will have a README.Debian file, in addition to
the standard READMEs. It details changes Debian has made to the standard
(maintainer's pristine version) install. Sometimes it's also in the
packages config directory.

 The benefits are fairly obvious, and for somebody like me, who deals
with apache/sendmail/samba/postfix/etc on multiple distros & platforms,
it's a lifesaver.
