Hi Charles,

How about using partition magic to split up the partitions made by compaq?

a) install software from HP
     This gives you: c: 38 Gig? (hda1)
                     d: 2 Gig? (hda2)
Or something similar to this at least right?

b) install partition magic and make hda1 into three smaller partitions,
this should push hda2 to hda4. Windows will still see it as d: because
   the others are not vfat32.
     This gives you:
     hda1 20 Gig ---vfat32 (c:)
     hda2 ~18 Gig ---ext2 (linux)
     hda3 ~512MB ---linuxswap
     hda4 2 Gig ---vfat32 (d:)

or use partition magic to resize the partitions and get an extended
   partition in there.

c) install linux

d) don't re-install the hp software ever again because it will blow away
   all your fine work.

Perhaps the guru suggestion above is easier....

Arend
