Sorry, I don't know enough to help.

Here are some things I'd try:

* Upgrade to a 2.4.7 kernel. (It's like rebooting a Windows machine.
  It's bound to fix something!)

* Use "noapic" on the boot command line.

* If there is a way (I don't know of one) to force a crash dump, you
  might be able to examine your running system at your leisure (if you
  then boot in uniprocessor mode.)
