If your clent is Linux system (or really and system in which the X command works) you
can use xdmcp. Issue the command of the client:
X :1 -query <remote system name>  -once

First on the 7.1 system in the /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf file change the xdmcp lines so 
they say:
[xdmcp]
Enable=1
HonorIndirect=1
