startx is not going to work, because it the command starts the local X
server, and then starts the window manager, telling it to use the local
X server that was just started. This is what the startx script is
designed to do.
One possible way around this is to enable GUI logins over the network.
In this way, you would get the same type of login screen in Exceed as
you get when you boot in run level 5.
A second way would be to run vcn instead of Exceed.
You can also try starting just the window manager instead of using
startx. Try running .Xclients in your home directory instead of startx,
and see if that works.
