Yes, it would give an indication on what packages are wanted
actually and more important, where the packaging effort would be
worthwhile.
The contrib project could benefit from concentrating the rpm
building efforts on major interest software. It should aim at
providing a well-maintained source of RPM packaged software not
shipped by Red Hat. It should serve as a demonstration on what
additional free software Red Hat Linux users use apart from the
stock distribution. For large, frequently updated, and high-interest
packages, several packagers could decide to work as a team.
A community based approach could also provide a "number of open
bugs" counter next to the download link of a package. As a second
thought, users could rate a packaging effort on how usable or
popular a particular package is.
A restart of the Red Hat Contrib project should not end like the
very first Red Hat Contrib server: hundreds of packages, many
unmaintained ones, many out-of-date ones, not in sync with the
latest release of the distribution, and so on. It should not end as
a place where to put arbitrary packages of questionable interest.
