I admit it freely, im lost!

This being said, i tried to install Bastille Linux no go ,loop dependencies, installed
packages that
are showing up as not installed. i mean i had it.
Keep in mind i am in no way a programmer.
I need something simple. The only disadvantage to the firewalling that's set up at
the time of
install is that no masq is included for the lan.
I had a look at the firewall-config gui and shut it down.
There is no clear instructions on how to make rules in it's help.

What's all the more surprising is the level of difficulty that is involved in making
a useful firewall.

This is a letter of opinion. The firewall making process in RH 7.1 is way beyond
non programmer users. If your aim is making an operating system that can be useful
and easy for non programmer desktop users, this is an area of improvement.
Much is to be done.

Even the gui firewall config is in no way useful.
It may help the professional ,but for the end user,it's useless.
When making such a program, or gui think of it as building blocks.
Little boxes that make a lot of self configuration.
Like the window is the firewall itself.
you click Add
     first block masquerading.
Add second block trojan protection
Add third block ICQ, IRC

 ..... and so on.

They could be drag and drop items from a menu.
Alternatively ,a script with just a few
questions for the user could be called like a "Firewall configuration script" button.
This dosent mean that there cant be advanced options.
All the contrary. There could be different levels
like beginner ,intermediate,administrator.
( Make an experiment ,ask your husband or wife ( non programmers )
to try to modify a stock firewall with the present tools to just
add masquerading for the family LAN. : )

Im ready to assist in the design, and testing of such a tool.
Simplifying the job for beginners dosent mean less powerful.
It just means as we go along and learn ( which cant be done in a few weeks)
all that's to be learned in Linux at the beginning , we have good protection
and our installations set up properly until we're ready to make the plunge
in the intricacies of ipchains iptables.

Enough whining for a day ..
im serious if anyone is game to make such a tool
im ready to take the plunge.

Good day !
Richard Hebert
