I was able to use a utility called libraw1394_0.9.0 from
linux1394.sourceforge.net and using it I built a /dev/raw1394.
All the applications and utilities there are for cameras and video editors.
Oh well.....

You are probably missing some entries in the /dev directory. I am not sure
what the major and minor numbers are for firewire, although I can say I
successfully looked them up with http://www.google.com/linux once and got
a firewire DV camera working once under the Roswell beta. Good Luck!
