I upgraded my 7.0 box to 7.1 and I get this error...
It's an AMD K6-2 300MHz on a Soyo MB. It's got an adaptec 2940 SCSI card (not
built in) with my HDD, CD-ROM, and Zip disks on it.
I heard about some problems with the aic7xxx driver, but most of the postings
I read mentioned not being able to run the install. I had no problems
whatsoever running the install/upgrade. It all went in w/o a blip.
However, now when I boot, I get the infamous root fs error:
VFS: Cannot open root device "801" or 08:01
Please append a correct "root=" boot option
Kernel panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 08:01
Most of the archived messages and bugzilla stuff indicates that the
problematic Adaptec issues were more around Intel MB's w/ builtin SCSI
controllers. That's not my situation, so I think it's a completely different
problem...
I rebooted the system w/ an old 2.2.17 kernel, so I can get it running to try
to fix it.
My guess is that for some reason the aic7xxx driver is not being loaded or
something like that. I will have to look at the lilo.conf file the upgrade
modified and check to see that the /boot/initrd is indicated and was put into
place like I think it should have been.
IIRC that has to be there to boot from a SCSI controller?
I'm also going to try taking the kernel-2.4.3-x.i386.rpm file in and see if
building the kernel from source with the aic7xxx driver built into the kernel
helps.
If there's anything I should check that I haven't mentioned here, I'd
appreciate some words of wisdom. The downed machine isn't working quite right
with the 2.2.17 kernel in there. It's also my work machine, so I won't be
very productive until I get it all going... :(
Thanks for any and all pointers!

No, my friend, the way to have good and safe government, is not to trust it
all to one, but to divide it among the many, distributing to every one exactly
the functions he is competent to. It is by dividing and subdividing these
republics from the national one down through all its subordinations, until it
ends in the administration of every man's farm by himself; by placing under
every one what his own eye may superintend, that all will be done for the
best.
