I have an ACER usb cdwriter that is supposed to be supported by cdrecord
it's actually supported:

[root@linux2 Simo]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord 1.11a07 (i686-pc-linux-gnu) Copyright (C) 1995-2001 Jörg Schilling
Linux sg driver version: 3.1.17
Using libscg version 'schily-0.5'
scsibus0:
cdrecord: Warning: controller creates hard SCSI failure when retrieving CD
capabilities page.
        0,0,0 0) 'USB ' 'CD-R/RW 6X4X6 ' 'E.BZ' Removable CD-ROM
