Two details ..yes you need a command line ..that is so of some functions in the
windows
environment too.Basic things like formatting the hard drive ,partitioning have
to be made at the dos prompt. If ( not if but when ) you have to trash the whole
thing
there is no real way to clean up without typing commands at a DOS prompt.

Second detail. The very nature of applications available on the net for Linux make it
mandatory
to have a minimum of skills at the console. Compiling programs is one.
Granted some genius may one day make a gui to do the ./configure make make install.
But in my opinion if one is interrested in learning anything, compared to the slavery
of
Windows in which you are put in a craddle, put a bib on and a pacifier between your
teeth
telling you "You are a user stay a user, so we'll control and do with your machine
what
WE want it to do,and you haven't a word to say .. ", then Linux can provide for them
more
than they can chew on.

But there is a space in the middle .
An environment that is both attractive and yet fully functional.
There is an alternative.
Lately i was cussing at the firewalling..Well i took the time
checked this and that talked to people gathered data and finally
realised that the only thing not working was my brain..Only i learned
a lot in the process about a lot of different aspects of the system.
Now when i start the firewall GUI now i know what goes on behind the scenes.
Does everyone need that ? no
The gui works perfectly.
My point is GUI's are there to make what the ordinary folk would find
difficult ,complicated,or unattractive a breeze and a pleasure.
So yes the development of more attractive interfaces, make em flashy like crazy
is something that should go on.But onthe other hand ,keep making the base
even more powerful.
It's an equilibrium that's coming of age.
I have Gnome 1.4 ...i love it ..it's simple ,attractive.
But never take my command line away ! i need it to make the basic things go right.
I trust the command line. And it's more attractive now than ever for me.
It just says ...here you can learn

Richard

now where is my darn tuna sandwich ?
