Pawel,

Yes, the scanner is recognised in /var/log/messages, and the kernel says 
that it is loading scanner.c (I mention that in the original post a 
little past where you clipped).  Other than that mention in the log file 
though, I can't find any other refernce to the scanner where I'd expect 
it (like /proc/bus/usb).
