Hello Matthias,

MS> Last time I saw something similar on our corporate network, it was because
MS> someone had installed Windows 2000 server on their computer... I went and
MS> asked the poor guy what he was trying to do to my DNS server, but he said
MS> all that he did was to list its IP as a DNS server to be used for queries,
MS> nothing more.

WIN2K has a habit of trying to update any listed DNS servers under the
TCP/IP configuration (regardless if it should be trying to or not).

MS> I don't know enough about Windows to know if this is a "feature" of some
MS> kind, but yeah, it annoyed me too!

This is caused by:
a) DHCP Client service
 and/or
b) DNS Client services

I know that disabling both will stop this problem. We don't use DHCP,
so I haven't tried to go any further than isolating those two as the
culprits. I would assume the unauthorized updates are generated by
the DNS Client service alone, but we are talking about a Microsoft
product here...

HTH
