2.96 is NOT a beta, and actually more stable than 3.0.anything (which 
can't even compile KDE).

Are you sure it's a problem with the compiler rather than your code? gcc 
>= 2.96 is pretty strict about enforcing ISO C/ISO C++ compliance, see
