On my Redhat 6.2 system I was fiddling with the X
server config file, /etc/X11/XF86Config to see if
I could tweak it a bit, but I was unsuccessful.
The problem is:

The config file seems to know about only certain
screen sizes, more specifically 1280x1024 and
1600x1200. Both of theses screen sizes have an
aspect ratio which does not really match the monitor
very well. So using a ruler to measure my screen I
determined that 1400x1024 would be a very close match
to my monitor. So I went ahead and tried to modify
the XF86Config file accordingly, but the X server
choked on it, no matter what I did.

Then I tried to use the Xconfigurator tool, but it
also knew about only 1280x1024 and 1600x1200.

Does anyone know if the Xserver itself somehow only
can handle these discrete screen dimensions?

One would think that it should be possible to set up
almost any type of screen dimensions.

Thanks

Freddy
