My NFS server crashed last night and one of the clients appeared to lose
networking shortly after it came back up. While the server was down I
got lots of messages on the client:

kernel: nfs: task <number> can't get a request slot

then after the server came back up I got lots of:

kernel: statd: server localhost not responding, timed out
kernel: lockd: cannot monitor <server IP>
kernel: lockd: failed to monitor <server IP>

I tried rebooting the client using the GDM menu but nothing happened.
Ctrl-Alt-Del on a text console produced the message "shutdown: already
running" and nothing else. I couldn't log in because I use LDAP
accounts and even logging in as a file-based account times out waiting
for the LDAP server. I've set "bind_timelimit 3" in /etc/ldap.conf to
try to fix this next time (does that work?). I finally had to power
cycle the client.

Why does the client lose networking? Is it the network card (AMD 79c970
PCnet LANCE rev 68)? If so what should I use instead?
Thanks,
John Dalbec
