Go to:

http://rescuecd.sourceforge.net/

Download and burn an iso

then boot from  the cd

the following command will mount your hard drive on the /mnt directory. if
it's a scsi drive, then it will be sda.

mount /dev/hda1 /mnt

cd /mnt

if you type "ls" now you should be able to see your filesystem.

the following command will make the mounted drive in /mnt the virtual /
directory. you can now operate on it as you would on a "normally" booted
system:

chroot /mnt

Do what's been suggested to you, then type "exit" and you'll be back to
/mnt.

Eject the cd, and reboot.
